100 Nations Project - Uruguay
Situated between Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay is the most secular nation in South America. Although 50% of the population considers themselves Catholic, only about 1% actually attends mass. One in four Uruguayans claims no religious affiliation at all.
A century of secular humanism has left many people searching for religious answers. Sadly, the Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses have filled the spiritual vacuum for many of these seekers.
